The Pooka's Prayer
Now I lay me down to sleep,
Dear Lord, my Pooka soul to keep.
I know You've never made a mistake.
But if tomorrow I should wake,
Please make me like a human kid.
These ears and whiskers, God forbid!
I want to have a human soul.
Please change me Lord and make me whole.
If I should die before I wake,
Dear Lord, my Pooka soul to take.
A Pooka is a shape-shifting magical being from Irish folklore that assumes the shape of a huge hairy creature that can speak with a human voice. The pooka assumes the shape of any creature that it desires to be. Pookas are also rumored to be the clowns of the changling society, happy on the outside and crying on the inside.
