A black & white version of this picture won a cover contest for a herptelogical society a few years ago.But I'd always wanted to do a fuller composition in various colors. The calligraphy paper works well with the natural brown & black markings of the leopard tortoise, a common species on the African savannahs. The details don't show up well in this format, but there are hundreds of lines making up the tortoise, especially on the legs & shell.
