My wildlife art focuses on the overlooked; the less glamourous species, the unseen fauna of our backyards, the few seconds' glimpse of a creature in the wild. I try to paint the scene as if the viewer weren't there, just the animal going about its everyday activities. Often I like to imagine what happens before & after the moment that I'm painting.
I sketch from life as often as possible, but a childhood spent watching Jacques Cousteau and "Wild Kingdom" left me with the ability to envision animal behavior & movements. I concentrate on endangered species; because how can people care that an animal is disappearing if they don't even know what it looks like?
Most of my work is acrylic on canvas. But I also do pen & ink, often in combination with pencil. And the occasional scratchboard too. What most people comment on is the detail & colors in my work. Apparently I use a lot of bright colors, even when I think I'm being subtle.
My artwork has been in group and solo shows around Northeast Ohio, as well as juried into shows in Louisiana, Georgia and Kentucky. A regular in the Cold-Blooded Creations Exhibit in Florida since 2002 and a semi-finalist in the Courage Card Competition in Minnesota. Pictures are in private collections not only around the U.S., but in Switzerland, Canada, Finland & the U.K.
Illustrations have appeared in 'Bird Talk', 'Wildlife Rehabilitation Today', 'Bird Breeders' magazines. As well as newsletters: 'Erie Views', 'Dragon News', 'Notes From NOAH'. Also designed rubber stamps for Creative Block in Westlake, Ohio.
