This urban primitive is a self portrait of the artist 2003. Painted in my Northern Studio ( in the High Peaks of the Adirondack Mountains), not in my winter NYC studio. During the session for this one, young beer drinking neighbors on the balcony across Main Street were hooting and hollering at passing cars ( and actually barking at passing dogs ) and standing on their balcony glancing in occasionally as I painted this one. I think the painting began to freak them out a bit ... it got stranger and stranger as they got louder and louder. The cretins have since quieted down, but having an audience watch me paint changed the painting process entirely and I began scratching the canvas out of nervousness. A strange urban primitive painting emerged. A different idea about peep show ... what do you do when the canvas is looking back at YOU?
