I painted this early on Easter morning 2006.
Because it was early spring and early in the morning, it was sunny and a little chilly in New York City. I brought my little oil sketchbox down to Riverside Park and painted this en plein air, on site.
It is the view of the Hudson River. I was sitting on a bench relatively close to the boat basin.
The buildings are across the Hudson River in New Jersey and I was lucky since a man in a motorboat cut across the scene. I painted him in really quickly as he sped by. I used a lot of paint and I was listening to jazz vocals while I was painting this.
Finished in one session on 4-16-06.
I guess this is the first oil landscape I've done of the water, I did a soft pastel of the ocean once but never an oil landscape that I can remember. I want to try a lot more, some of the river and some of the ocean and some of the lakes in the Adirondacks. Boats are tons of fun also.
