Closeup Detail of Glaze

Media:  Clay, hand built

Winner
Juror's Choice

This clay piece was hand built with a slab of white stoneware clay and joined by using the coil and slip method. After forming and pulling the clay up with my hands, I left the natural torn edge in place to tie it organically to the earth. It was glazed with three coats of oil spot blue before firing.

The work represents a waterfall cascading downward, eroding the earth in it's path to make a place for itself. The elemental relationship between earth and water is played out in both the creation of the work and the finished piece itself.

The detailed photos give the viewer a look at the waterfall from another aspect and additionally show the way in which the glaze works to represent the elements portrayed.
