Media:  Acrylic fabric paints, fringe scraps, sari scraps
Dimensions:  Approx 5x45"/with fringe
Date of Work:  2007

My parents came thru' "the great depression". I remember my father telling me about going to where newspapers were printed to get the very first copy on the street while the ink was still wet. This, in order to beat the other applicants to whatever jobs were listed. They survived, even tho' they didn't necessarily "flourish." We were taught to "use it up, make it do, do without or make it yourself. Hence these scarves that I have sold for many years on eBay. The "scarf blank" is the trimming from saris obtained from a sari and spice shop in "Little India," a district near where I live. (I also recommend the buffet lunches and the sandwich shops where you can order "masala dosa." The designs are my own (mainly Greyhounds which I also recycle once their "track lives" are over) and they are copyrighted, the fringe is leftover scraps from other projects. Each fabric takes the paint treatment a little differently. So each one is original, one-of-a-kind, and an experiment.
