Box Elder Wood Hollow Vessel

Media:  Wood
Dimensions:  7" x 8.5"
Date of Work:  07-17-06

This colorful piece is made of Box Elder wood with a Padauk wood pierced finial, and a textured base. The vessel wall is 1/4" and the base is a 1.5" diameter. This lightweight wood has the characteristic red rays emanating from the heartwood. I textured a lower section of the piece as though to cradle the upper rounded vessel. The finial is made from the typical blood red Padauk wood to highlight the reds in the vessel. It was turned to a very thin 1/16" wall and then pierced with a very delicate variation of patterns. This vessel could be used as a potpourri allowing the scents to emanate through this pierced finial. It was all sanded to 600 grit and then finished buffed with the three-wheel Beal system and Carnauba wax for a durable finish.
