Last year I curated a show about diversity. One of the ideas I thought would have been good subject matter was Harriet Tubman. Although I did not create a piece for this show, because I was curating, I still held this idea in my mind.

Harriet Tubman was a courageous African woman (and escaped slave herself), who led slaves from the Southern U.S. into the free states in the North. She was called by some the Moses of her people.

I was browsing through eBAY (A Kaydies Ceramic Creations store) and came across an elegant bust of an African woman . It had the basic features so I purchased it.

One of the few photographs available of Harriet Tubman show her with a headscarf. Since Harriet's features were heavier than the busts', I used polymer clay and fleshed out the chin, cheeks, nose and eye ridges.

After getting the polymer clay set on the bisque, I applied stained glass and some polymer clay tiles (lips, eyes, headscarf pattern). I grouted the face in brown with a copper wash and the headscarf and shirt in blue.
