Torrey Newcomb looks for art she creates to both resonate with her aesthetic and to stretch her perspective: she wants to learn something from what she experiences. She hopes that others will also find illumination, resonance and stretching from experiencing her artwork.
Torrey's landscapes and abstract paintings are reflections of the human condition, illuminating our struggle to find meaning in and to assign meaning to the signs and symbols surrounding us. These pieces depict the harmony and struggle between diverse components of a whole.
Torrey's figurative images are private, intimate moments of feeling. The use of posture, color and texture make connections between the viewer's experience and the emotion of the image.
Torrey Newcomb is a person of many tastes and talents. She holds a physics degree from the
University of Washington. She has produced artwork in many media, including paint, pencil, batik, collage, clay, and copper. She sings alto in the
Shades of Praise Gospel Choir, and teaches science at
Seattle Preparatory School. Torrey's artistic experiences have been guided in limited formal instruction at several schools and by other artists she has been privileged to know. Her work is held in several private collections across the United States.
