Maybe it could also be called 'midlife crisis', he has been walking the spiraling life path long enough that the early years are far behind, and he wonders how far up ahead the road continues. What he sees in the mirror is not clear to us. Is he going to take this opportunity to change anything in his life? Does he even have the power to change?
