Jane Petitjean Artist Statement

I create abstract and whimsical images in my art. My art serves as personal commentary of musical and cultural celebration inspired by life forces and experiences. I often explore the artistic nature of music (especially Jazz), and personal memory in my art. Focusing mainly on the movement, rhythm, and delight of music, I examine the play and impact of music on my personal beliefs and life experiences.

In my "Jazz Abstract Series," I utilize my artistic nature as a musician and imagination as a visual artist to explore the exhilaration and amusement of the creative world. The intent of this series is to look at the dimensions, substance and fundamental nature of musical and visual creative expression in a visual way. I try to construct and create these works as both totally musical and visual works that capture the essence and excitement I feel as I experience Jazz. They are part of a multifaceted personal landscape that I see as an essential part of my continued development as an artist, musician, teacher, and female human being. Art and music becomes an empowering and valuable way of recognizing the possibilities I hold within me to develop as a person.

I graduated with a BFA from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I have been a professional illustrator and graphic designer for over 20 winning awards and gaining a reputation as an innovative designer and artist. My work has been published both as a professional illustrator and as a fine artist.

My work in the fine arts is currently on exhibit at COLLINGWOOD ARTS CENTER in Toledo, OH.

I also have work at the prestigeous Leslie Adams Gallery, here in Toledo for a show in conjunction with the Toledo Artist Federationl.

My most recent exhibit was this past fall at the Artomatic 419 Exhibit in conjuction with the Toledo Arts Commission of Greater Toldeo. It was a spectacular event that highlighted some of the area's finest artists and featured the talent within our community. I personally made some valuable contacts with agents, gallery owners and collectors. It was a very successful event. Interested in seeing some of the happeings?
