The body is one of the most recognizable objects known to humankind. It is with this premise that I began to delve into the world of what is unknown and unique within us. I would like to think of the images in this series as windows into another world where light and color are used to entirely reconstruct the body. The photographs in this series are oddities, disfigurements of the self, and like a Rorschach test, when turned, new images emerge out of the darkness, confusing the scene and further obscuring what is solid and definable. Most often, the subjects are monumental in their appearance, and yet each portrayal represents hidden tales of innocence, anguish, turmoil, love gone awry, solitude, even femininity, and death. The naked figures expose a revelatory vulnerability regarding man’s ambitions, fears, feelings about their physical bodies and inner emotions. In a modern society, our senses are completely overwhelmed with external trappings of pageantry, sexuality, and gluttonous enticements. This influences our understanding of life, one that is substantially lacking in meaning. We turn inward, become retrospective and isolated, and oftentimes yearn for something that is just outside of our realm of reality. In this series, I connect humankind to nature. The bodies are quiet, isolated landscapes. As a thinking individual, I feel the need to come to terms with my mortality. Lately, I’ve been consumed with it. My philosophical approach in this series is organic in nature. It is the instinctual understanding that we all eventually surrender to the earth. This is a universal understanding, integrating us as males, females, humans, and souls. Please contact me at chatnoir16@email.com for inquiries.
