Media:  Mixed - Acrylic, gouache, watercolor, India ink
Dimensions:  11.5"x15"
Date of Work:  2007

Second in a series of mixed media work using photographic references by Jay Harris. This piece began as an abstract acrylic monoprint on Rives Heavyweight BFK paper. When a photographer generously gave me permission to reinterpret his work, I jumped at the chance to really examine some of his photographs closely and add my own vision to the imagery. I decided to take another look at some abstract monoprints I had pulled without satisfaction, trying to find similarities and contrasts in both images that I could harmonize into a finished whole. The colors and vertical composition of the monoprint I chose for this piece matched with the photo reference, but the print also had a textural quality which contrasted with the soft focus of the reference photo. During the process of painting, my goal was to investigate and reinterpret not only the formal aspects of the imagery, but the expressive aspects as well. Sucessive painting and washes overrun the original border around the print in some areas. Paper has deckle edge on left side. Other sides gentlly torn.
