This quote is among my favorites, and I have it as a button and a bumpersticker on my car. The woman in this John Singer Sargent painting seems absurdly constrained by the prim and somber dress, holding a single magnolia in her hand as if saying, "You've got to be kidding..."
This is the seventh in a series of dimensional collages featuring Sargent's work. This one is especially textured using spackle under the paint. The line on either side of the figure is raised about 1/16" of an inch... I wanted a sense of boundaries that she's rising above.
