Change is a compelling piece of art. The background is my favorite red, with 19th century magazine text embedded in it, and painted over with a red-orange glaze. On top of the magazine pages, I've sprinkled magenta and yellow translucent glitter. The glitter plus the red paint create a vivid, intense effect.
The young woman is from Vermeer's Girl with Pearl Earrings, and I placed her over a photo from a deserted Mid-Eastern village. In front of the girl's face--and across the lower part of the collage--I've draped some gold tulle. It's not quite like a veil, but the suggestion is there. And, the dictionary definition of "change" is beneath her while three 19th-century mother-of-pearl buttons seem to hold the veil/fabric in place.
I wanted to portray a woman who is between freedom and servitude. The cool colors in her portrait and her fresh, trusting expression are a dramatic contrast with the apparent sizzle of the rest of the collage.
I like the sense of history and heat in this collage. It's moving towards the kinds of vivid colors that I hope to include in my upcoming art.
