This is one of eight collages based on the paintings of John Singer Sargent. The scan doesn't show the texture in this collage, but the little girl is clearly standing on a floor. The quote--done as gel image transfer--says, "The dignity of the artist lies in his duty of keeping awake the sense of wonder in the world." (Gilbert K. Chesterton) I like this quote because he doesn't say "his sense of wonder" but THE sense of wonder. And, to me, that is an important mission of art. This piece was the result of months of experimenting with this collage theme.
