This started as an attempt to do a brighter-colored flower study, similar to Georgia O'Keefe. But, my first effort looked like "Frida Kahlo coloring book."
So, I flipped through a book of art by John Singer Sargent, and I was inspired by the way that he painted grass & trees in "A Boating Party." So, over the Frida-Kahlo-gone-wrong study, I painted wild strokes of color... pink, orange, yellow, white, purple, blue, and even some green.
Now, I tend to paint in an Impressionist style. My art is about light and color, but the subject is usually obvious. Not so with this painting, which is a close-up of the center of a pink rose.
It's practically a semi-abstract, even from a distance.
But, I like it.
After completing this painting and looking at it for awhile, I realized that --with some tweaking--it could be a great design for upholstery fabric. (I realize that this doesn't recommend it as a painting, per se, but it's an interesting note anyway.)
So, I tiled it (see detail image) and I like the effect.
Anyway, I don't know if I'd call this a "great painting." It's a study, really, and I expect that the results--which I like because the colors are juicy--are going to influence my next paintings.
But I'll frame this piece anyway, and acknowledge it as an unusual piece (for me) but an important one.
