I was at the flood plains near Houston early one July morning as the sun was coming up. The colors were rich, favoring shades of orange sherbet and a Caribbean teal. Now and then a pure white heron landed at the water's edge, and then took off after wading in the shallow water. It was a lovely sunrise, both peaceful and lush. I painted in a relaxed manner, though I was eager to capture the beauty of the moment before the light changed. Sunrise colors, like those at sunset, are among the most jewel-like of the day. And, this was an especially gorgeous morning. I painted with lots of phthalo greens and blues, which--unfortunately--don't show up in the scan, no matter how much I try tweaking the colors in Adobe Photoshop. You'll need to use some imagination to "see" this painting as it really is. The greens in this painting are generally the same as the basic green crayon in your kindergarten coloring box. It's the color you used first when you were drawing a Christmas tree. The blue of the water mimics the teals and turquoises of Caribbean seas, with a lucious cobalt blue in the shadows and a few purplish accents.. This is a very Impressionistic piece. The colors are best seen up close while the overall impression is intended for across-the-room viewing.
