This started as a cubist semi-abstract, based on one of my favorite sunrise paintings. As it evolved, it took on its own unique character, and it is a gorgeous, almost compelling painting.
The blue sky is a pale cobalt blue. The texture and thickness of the paint varies considerably, and the tone features the nuances of the sky at sunrise. It's interrupted by the white-yellow-orange stripe of the sun.
That's something that I'm very keen on: Showing the white that is how very bright the sun looks, on the horizon at dawn.
The lower part of the canvas is dark green, but it also features a wide range of subtle colors, including red, orange, lime, magenta, and blues. It is interrupted by a cadmium red-orange stripe of color, representing the rich colors of the sun, still hidden by the trees.
My final addition to the painting was glitter, mostly translucent, and in colors relative to the area of the canvas. I added the glitter in stripes, to echo the red and yellow symbols of the sun. The glitter in the sky is predominantly a pale lavender, with hints of lemon yellow close to the sun/stripe. The glitter in the darker areas is mostly teal green, with magenta & cobalt glitter on the red stripe.
The photos of this painting don't come close to showing its full effect. And, from every angle and in each light, the painting will look very different. The stripes almost shimmer like an aurora borealis.
I'm very pleased with this, and hope that at least some of this unusual painting conveys in the photo.
