This painting has a funny story behind it. It started as a demo during my painting workshop at Artfest 2004. I wasn't happy with the (horizontal) half-finished painting, so I started to paint over it--holding it vertically--for a composition study.
I had roughed-in the lights & darks, and half the canvas was painted over when I paused. The sketch looked almost exactly like the fields in Concord, Massachusetts, when the wild daylilies and goldenrod are in bloom.
So, that's how I finished it, working with my own photos of Concord and other New England fields.
This is mostly a color and composition study, but it is a finished painting. It's on an 11" x 14" canvas board, but I've supported it with stretcher bars as well, for stability.
This is a high-contrast painting, best displayed where the colors will catch indirect sunlight. It conveys the vivid natural beauty of Concord's wild landscapes, but also the calm of the open fields on a perfect and lazy afternoon.
