Emily Carr's

Detail Image

For experiment: I flipped mine & found it looks even more like Ms Carr's

Media:  Pastel
Dimensions:  24 x 36"
Date of Work:  1999

I don't claim to be psychic, but if you listen up carefully, I think you'll hear the Twilight Zone music twinkling in the distance. I am including this piece in the "Hidden" show because of the mystery that hides the true meaning of this piece from me.

I did this drawing in 1999 while living in New Zealand. It was completely random, and made up. My in-laws had just returned from Vancouver, B.C. in Canada, and when my mother-in-law, Marjorie, saw this she commented how much it looked like the work of artist, Emily Carr. I didn't know who Emily Carr was at the time, but Marjoire had brought back a book of her works and I skimmed through it, devouring all her wonderful images. Then I landed on a page with a painting she did in 1942 called "Clearing." I was pretty stunned because in many ways, it looked like the one I had just made, with a similar title. Even the trees in the foreground are similar in shape.

This little revelation prompted me to seek out Ms. Carr's work and since then I have read her books, and have become very familiar with her beautiful art and her life. She was a remarkable person, and I'm pleased to feel this connection to her.

This piece was done using Windsor & Newton pastels on Canson pastel paper.

I have included Ms. Carr's "Clearing" as a comparison tool. If you look at the last Detail image (get your magnifying glass) I have switched the view of my painting and noticed that it resembles Ms. Carr's painting even more. Its almost as if my version is a later version of the one she did on site. I love the comparison. And honest to God, I had never ever heard of her before.
