This is a Giclee print of an oil painting that I based on the Canterbury Shaker community as it was almost a hundred years ago. The members of the commmunity did not marry but lived by their motto of "hands to work, hearts to God." A great many orphaned children were welcomed there.They were given a very good intellectual grounding and were also taught the many manual skills at which the community excelled. At the age of sixteen they could either join the community or go out into the world. This girl is almost sixteen and she must soon make that decision.
