 | My name is Kay Petal and I Felt Alive!!! I am a sculptural needle felt artist
from Alaska. From my home studio on the shores of a scenic Alaskan lake, I
create my unique felted wool characters, Felt Alive Wool Sculptures. Using a
single barbed felting needle borrowed from industry, I sculpt with wool. Lofty,
lustrous wool tangles into solid felt creations bound only by my imagination.
Wool is an amazing sculpting medium!
I discovered this glorious art form on the heels of recovery from treatment
of a rare cancer. With nearly the fervor I used to find the best treatment for
my rare disease, I researched needle felting extensively. I studied pictures
from the handful of people I consider masters of this form and read everything I could
possibly turn up!
As an artist, I consider consider myself self-taught. I come from an artistic family and grew up creating! When I discovered needle felting in January of 2007, I knew I had found my medium! Over the course of my short needle
felting career, I have only taken two workshops. It just so happens that they
were with my needle felting idol, Birgitte Krag Hansen, one of the
pioneers of needle felting. Learning from her opened my eyes to the real
possibilities of sculpting with wool and I haven't looked back since.
Unlike many artists here, I generally greedily hoard all of my creations. I needle felt purely for the pleasure with the freedom of knowing that I am not attempting to satisfy a market. My private collection is very much treasured by myself and my family! I do enjoy making special creations for individuals and I do accept commissions.

I created a business around my art based on teaching and writing. I have developed a unique and innovative
online needle felting course
for which I have written an 8 chapter tutorial/ebook as well as built an
extensive online video tutorial library to supplement the instructions. I offer
personal assistance as well. I very much enjoy watching students learn to bring
wool to life and I am proud to say I have students all over the world!
Creating lifelike characters out of wool is my passion! I am totally addicted to
it and must have a project going at all times. My cancer treatment was wildly
successful and I am happy to say I Felt Alive!!
