Society has been trying to condition woman into thinking many false things for as long as I can remember. According to the current add campaigns I see, I am suppose to be thin, pretty, tan, have white teeth, a degree, a family, and above all else I should have a “fresh and clean” feeling at all times. I should give myself wholly to all others around me, even though they are perfectly capable of handling their own lives. While browsing through a magazine catering to “Today’s Woman” I noticed a re-occurring theme in the cigarette ads. Ads that use to simply portray woman as being glamorous, while smoking were replaced with the new modern theory of “Today’s woman”. Women who are constantly on the go, multi tasking, often balancing career, family, and the myriad of other important tasks. The ads basically mentioned the same thing over and over. “Since your so busy catering to everyone else, why not take a couple of minutes to relax, and have a smoke…you deserve it.” With the same stereo typical attitudes marketing companies constantly cram down our throats. I created the “Funeral Purse”. As we all know, woman like to shop, and we have mastered the multi-task. Now, we have a lovely small and stylish purse in summer white, it can hold your lipstick, cell phone, personal body spray, tampons, AND when it all gets to be just too much for you to handle, just pluck off a cigarette and enjoy! On a personal note, I feel I should point out that I do in fact battle an addiction to nicotine, and have for the past 10+ years. The decision I made at a very young age to “try” a cigarette was a bad one, and something I have to live with, or die from. During a moment of naive insecurity I bought into the idea, that smoking was cool.
