When the jonquils, or as some around here call them, buttercups, start blooming, you know spring has arrived! Little boys seem the first to notice, and mine always brought me in a handful (still does, sometimes), and expected me to put them in a vase right away. Keeping in tradition of my mother and grandmother, I'd grab out an old canning jar, fill it with water, and have an instant Spring center piece!
I used an old-timey Ball blue glass canning jar for the model in this picture. I found two in a flea market in Northwest Georgia a few years back, and had to have them! They are both from the early nineteen hundreds, and have glass lids with rubber seals, and a metal pull contraption.
I painted this picture on masonite that my husband, Big Daddy Rooster, was throwing away. When I saw it I yelled, "Wait! That there's instant canvas!" When will he ever learn?
