I originally painted this piece to hang in my own home in a place that we frequently redecorate based on the season. I wanted to create something with a winter theme and a New England feel to it. At the time I was teaching my daughter to ice skate so using our skates was the perfect solution.
I waited for a time of day when the sun would be just right, then I set the skates in the snow and took a series of digital photographs from them. I then used photoshop to adjust the color and contrast of the shadows in the snow, until I found a combination that complemented the ice skates. I then used the digital photographs as the reference for the painting.
The paintng is on 300 lb. Arches watercolor paper.
