"Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" is my homage to my Native American heritage and the beauty in the pain of it. The title was taken from a book written in 1970 of the same title about the slaughter of Sioux prisioners at Wounded Knee. This piece portrays only the beauty of that past pain, that past stain, yet great part of American history. I've used my daughter as my model. She and the white horse are done in white and gray satin, the horse having a silver bead as the highlight in his eye. The heart is stuffed and filled, hand-beaded in red and silver beads as well as dangling beads. The cross is representative of the redemption that is afforded all man, no matter the sin, no matter the race. . . if only we will ask Him. The feather has a silver beaded top and is attached to the war bridle. The wooden dowels stretching the fabric is bound with leather straps. The wording is hand-stitched in red silk. The outside edge is hand beaded in silver beads and the whole piece is machine stiched to form dowel pockets. This piece won Patron's Choice in the "Tapestry: Storytelling in FibreArt" EBSQ Show and is available for sale. I am accepting all offers. You can contact me at McClayArt@yahoo.com. Thank you.
