Too Late for the Horse Show.
Arabians have always been my favorite breed, so of course I chose one for my first equine sculpture that I intended to release as an open edition. I am intrigued by old stone buildings and chose an old barn for the setting.
This particular piece is cast in cold cast bronze and an antiquing solution has been applied, allowing all the wonderful details of the bronze and surface to show through. It has been sealed with polyurethane. It was sold on eBay to benefit the Las Vegas Live Model Horse Show/Shiloh Rescue.
As shown below, some of the other pieces in this open edition have been cast in resin and then painted with acrylic and given a realistic glossy eye.
The process from start to finish takes me about a month to complete and I was unable to have it ready in time for the Horse Show. In brief, I created the master resin. Then used it to make a polyurethane mold. The polyurethane resin (or resin and bronze powder for the cold cast bronze) is mixed and poured into the mold. After a few minutes it hardens and can be released. The piece needs to be sanded, scoured, and if plain resin, it needs to be primed. Then the paint or patinas can be applied. Finally, the piece is sealed.
