ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sharon has been legally blind since birth. She is a self-taught artist who began drawing at an early age. About four years ago she took an art course at Indiana University South Bend. She studied under Ron Monsma. Working mostly in charcoals and pastels, Sharon's main goal is for others to understand the beauty in what she sees.
A question I get often about my visual impairment is "What do you see?" Since it is difficult to explain to others how I see, I try to convey that in my artwork. I struggle with the validity of pieces. Knowing that I cannot see the detail and shadows that other artists do sometimes drives me to believing that my work is inferior. Although my world is not crystal clear, I do hope that others can appreciate the view I offer through my works..
Drawing/painting gives me an outlet for personal expression and exploration. I do not like to provide descriptions that depict my feelings regarding my work because I believe each viewer’s thoughts concerning a piece should be guided by their own personal experience.
Lately, I have taken to digital art. For me, this medium offers endless possibilities of exploration and development to me as an artist.
My inspirations come from various sources. For my portraits, I am studying what the eyes reveal. What silent stories they hold. Personal experiences drive my abstracts.
Art is a powerful tool it has the ability to unify or disharmonize souls.
