Chinese brush painting is a mode of spiritual exploration for me through meditative movement, inner attunement, and flowing energy. My paintings are Chinese brush paintings in that I learned the little-changed, thousand-year-old techniques from a fabulously talented teacher of free-hand style brush painting and calligraphy. I've taken traditional Chinese forms of brushwork; use of color, composition, and space; and materials (such as brushes of animal hair and bamboo and ink made of pine soot) and blended them with western ideas and methods. The result is my own inspired "style" of brush painting in which I try to capture the rhythm and beauty of the brushwork, while conveying the true qualities of the subject and instilling a sense of life energy, or chi.
