I remember drawing with my mom at 2 1/2 years old. She would draw a picture and I would trace it on the back. I also freehand a picture of my dad complete with glasses and eyelashes. At 5 years old I knew that I wanted to be an artist. I had a crayon drawing of a red robin hung on the wall during a parent get together with the teacher. I remember being so proud. I knew then it was all I wanted to do.
My parents supported me in my art but wanted me to have something to fall back on when I went to college. They didn't believe that I could make a living at my art. So my major was Phys. Ed. I hated it. I failed Red Cross, ha! Only because I didn't go to class. That's how much I hated it. My counselor thought I needed to rethink my major. So I majored in Graphic Design and Illustration. It was what I wanted to do not Phys. Ed. I loved it. But I wasn't really happy with a college setting so I decided to explore other avenues.
I sent my transcript to Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida. I was accepted. I took the bus down there and I never looked back! I had found my niche. I was no longer a outsider! There were others like me, ha! Spacey and wanting to do art all the time, ha! I knew that I belong. At that time Ringling was a three year art school. I graduated with a certificate in Graphic Design and Illustration.
I came back home to Mobile and for the next
3 years I struggled to find a art job. I would get great compliments on my portifolio but noone would hire me. I worked at different art jobs and I just finally gave up on graphic design work. Not that I couldn't do it but it was too frustrating trying to find a job. I decided to concentrate on Fine Arts.
On the first time entering the local art show arena I won first place. From then on almost every show that I entered I would recieve some type of award. I have done one woman shows, fine art and craft shows, museum shows, gallery shows. I've done publicity for local art organizations, I have been President of a local art association. I have done publicity for art associations. I even chaired an outdoor arts and craft show My paintings are in collections locally and nationally. I've been written up in magazines, local and national newspapers.
I paint regional landscapes and portraits in transparent watercolor, gouache, color pencil and gold leaf. I have done some papermache sculptures and I am interested in what I can maybe do with polymer clay. I am willing to take commissions especially painted furniture. I incorporate a sense of humor in whatever I do.
I hope you enjoy looking at my paintings. Thanks, Sharon
