This piece was created by applying multiple glazes over the initial pastel drawing on paper. Underpainting white was used to build texture. I "carved" the 12 signs of the zodiac into the side columns, placing them according to their elements. For instance, Aries is a fire sign, so the glyph was added up high, close to the sun. I wanted to depict the feel of an artifact from an ancient civilization throughout the painting. Hopefully, this helps to convey the importance astrology had on past cultures.

My ideas for this began with my own sign. I was born on the Taurus and Gemini cusp. The image of two bulls represents this. The fish and the water are symbols of the reign of Pisces and Aquarius. The circular arrangement of the fish sweeping in from the air and water signifies the wheel of time. My title for the painting was inspired by this -- time marching on. The sun and moon represent a balance in the universe (and life) and the procession of the equinox.

There is an enormous amount of symbolism and meaning in the fascinating world of astrology. I wanted to mirror that in "Marching Bulls" on a much smaller scale, of course. The fetus?...I'll leave that one open to your own interpretation. Thanks for looking.
