How long have you been creating?

Since I was in college in the 60's.

What is your media of choice?

Oil paint on canvas.

What are you motivations for creating?

My serious work is mostly super-realism of places I have been to, or of objects which invite me to explore. The process of painting a scene allows me the luxury of revisiting the place and becoming more intimately connected to what attracted me to it in the first place. Another motivating factor, besides self indulgence, is simple financial necessity.

What other artists or movements inform your work?

Certainly, my very favorite artist is John Singer Sargent. And his work "The Daughters of Edward D. Boit" never fails to overwhelm me with complete awe. I also love Vermeer for his rendering of space and composition, and Rene Magritte for his simplicity and wit. On the contemporary scene, Jim Rosenquist and Richard Estes are tops on my list. The sheer skill and craft of a painter draws me in more than conceptual art does.

What do you find visually stimulating right now?

The infinite variety of colors in the late winter landscape.

What's the last book you read?

"The Worst Hard Time" by Timothy Egan

What are some of your artistic goals for 2007?

To finish a seven-foot canvas of a Russian convent wall. Then, to embark on a series of paintings about sheets, bedding, folded cloth and how it catches light. Also to earn enough money to paint our house.

What would you like your fellow EBSQ artists and our collectors to know about you and/or your work?

My profile says it all. Most of the paintings I offer for sale are large, and therefore problematic to ship...or to place. They are also in the higher price range and difficult to sell. I am hoping that with more exposure through EBSQ, perhaps someone out there will be interested in purchasing a piece.
