This piece was inspired by an old song by Arthur R. Scammell. My favorite verse: "Holy Smoke! What a scuffle! All hands are excited, It's a wonder to me that there's nobody drowned; There's a bustle, confusion, the wonderful hustle, They're all jiggin' squid on the Squid Jiggin' Ground". Portions of the song are in the text collage underneath the stain glass. I was really happy with this piece as I felt in control of the glass cutting and I was able to achieve a sense of movement in the water. To the right are old images that are etchings of squid and boats and the hunting of squid. I wanted to show the squid as a strong powerful creature and the collage elements are intended to point at the history of man's relationship with the squid. All of my glass mosaics start their life as digital collages. I enjoy combining text and images that show through the glass in a very layered way. I think sea creatures are the perfect subjects for this method of working since they live their life beneath water. Stain glass is perfect for depicting water and all that hides below.
