Media:  Glass Mosaic
Dimensions:  12 x 12
Date of Work:  08

This work combines an original wacom drawing of a Giant Squid with other digital collage elements. My original artwork was printed out on epson watercolor paper and then traditional glass mosaic techniques were used. The materials are paper, gold flake, stain glass, unglazed porcelain and half round marbles. The charcoal grout really makes the colors pop. ______________________________________________ The text used has words highlighted such as creature, monster, fighting sperm whale and so on. I wanted this guy to be colorful and bold. I think Squid and octopus are the perfect subject for artists because so few people have held one in their hands. For this reason the creature is begging to be abstracted, colorized and pretty much reinvented as the artist sees fit.________________________________ This guy's name is "King Squid" and he lives in the deep sea and he obtains food by taking what he needs. He has a sense of entitlement and does not have time for sissies. The only one that really understands him is his Queen._____________________________________ I chose to depict this fellow in such a playful manner because he came along at a time when I had created several other squid mosaics and some with more traditional deep sea color pallets. I really wanted him to be fun and to stand apart in the series. I guess I was looking for something new to do with squid and he was the answer.
