I am Julie A. Smith, or jas. I'm a Finnish-American painter. I prefer to draw and paint, but sometimes I'll sculpt. I also enjoy working with textiles and re-creating Renaissance works.
Besides coming from an artistic and creative family, I am self-taught. I've had one art sculpting class in college. Although, I have a desire in learning, my degrees are not in the arts...maybe next time around. I currently am working on a Ph.D. in information technology. My employer is the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. I do draw inspiration from my education and personal and work experiences.
Most of what I create is what just comes out of my head, however, I love reproducing works from the great Masters. I'm thoroughly in love with Velázquez and van Gogh...and now Vermeer...what's with the "V"s. However, my husband and I both enjoy Goya's work. We fell in love with "Goya's Dog" (and his other work) when we went to The Prado in 2004 when I just had to have a pilgrimage to see Velázquez' paintings.
