Sock in progress, toe up

Media:  knitting
Dimensions:  6" x 4"
Date of Work:  3.2009

This is an original sock design, done in traditional Anatolian knitting patterns. A feature of Anatolian knitting, as well as other Middle Eastern designs, are that they are what are known as BALANCED--no one color dominates as the background or main color. In addition, the designs are almost always symmetrical. This gives an eye-teasing property, somewhat like those optical illusions that are either two profiles in silhouette or a vase, depending on your point of view. Though Anatolian patterns are frequently given names from living things (Apple, Young Man's Mustache, Eye of the Nightingale), the patterns are abstract and mathematical, typical of Islamic art. The combination of symmetry, balance and mathematical repetition make these designs pleasing to knit and pleasing to the eye. This sock is knitted in fine yarn at a gauge of 8 stitches to the inch and is knitting from the toe up, a technique typical of Turkish and Balkan knitting. Western European stockings are knitted typically from the cuff down.
