In psychological (Jungian) terms , the "Shadow" is an archetypal symbol for that which is unconscious in each of us. It could be a positive (ie, a talent which has yet to be developed) or a negative (ie, an unethical behavior that one justifies).
There are numerous myths which reflect the archetype of the “shadow”. One of the most well known is Homer’s Odyssey. Ulysses must face and conquer various threats and temptations (his unconscious) as he pursues his quest toward his destination (individuation).
An example of the "shadow" unexpossed, would be the legendary reality of Hitler's treatment of the Jews.
This painting is an invitation to the viewer to reflect on "shadow" and what it means to them.
