When I was about 8, I entered a poster contest. It was suppose to advertise a cable access kid's program called "The Sunshine Show" and my poster won. Winning entailed a visit to my school by the slightly creepy host of the show (a hunched over teenager with a hood and those glasses with holographic eyes on the lenses) and a plastic space shuttle with taffy tied to it with curly ribbon.
I didn't realize art had anything to do with winning or losing. When I was deciding what to draw, when I was in the middle of drawing it and mailing it -- it never entered my mind that someone was out there waiting to give or withhold taffy. I was happy to just draw what I wanted and show it to someone who was interested. I still feel the same way.
