Marilyn Zack is a contemporary artist who began drawing and painting in the early 70's. Her ability to combine light and color with transparent oil washes and loose brushwork captures the essence of her subject without excessive detail.
Her landscapes are usually views of hidden, off-the-road, quiet places. She not only reveals how they look, but more importantly, how they feel. To capture the spirit of the place, she produces her work in the studio from sketches and other reference materials.
Her portrait and figurative paintings are informal. Pencil strokes are lively, brush strokes are loose and flowing and details are added sparingly. She paints intuitively and has the ability to capture the essence of a person, thus creating a picture that is at once intimate and emotional.
Marilyn studied oil painting for 5 ½ years under master colorist Helen Sowa Flynn; she is otherwise self-taught. She also works in pastel, colored pencil and watercolor. Her art has been strongly influenced by artists such as Richard Schmid, Burton Silverman, Edgar Degas and Claude Monet .
Marilyn's award winning artwork has been in numerous juried exhibits and Midwestern galleries. Her artwork and commissions are in private collections throughout the United States. She has been a member of the Chicago Artist's Coalition and severl local art leagues.
After a hiatis of several years, Marilyn is returning to her first love and her greatest passion - her art. Expect to see more of her work in the near future.
