"Hope for Hooves" was created to raise awareness of the plight of horses on premarin ranches. The grandfather horse is Hawkeyes, and his grandson is Apache. They were rescued from liquidated Premarin ranches. Inside their silhouettes you can see depictions of the other horses rescued along with them. Working from the rescue ranch owner's photos, I first drew the outlines of the two horses on Arches cold-press watercolor paper. I put in some loose watercolor washes. When the initial washes were dry, I drew in some of the other herd members, adding detail with pen & ink. I wanted to give a feeling of hope within these creatures by the gesture of the horses and with the colors chosen, for their spirits are wonderful, even with the negative things they had to see and experience.
