My cat Bridges would turn up missing and we could look for hours for him, and then find him hiding in the ferns right outside our door. One time I looked for him for a long time, not realizing he was quietly lounging on the top of a ladder right above my head! To create this piece, I drew the tabby and ferns in foliage. I filled all the background shadows and black areas with india ink. The next step was to use colored pencil on the white areas and highlights, whiskers, etc. as a sort of resist, to protect the small white areas. I painted in the colors with watercolor washes. The final step was to add more color pencil to shade the fur, eyes and leaves. The end result was an elegant portrait...fit for a king (of the jungle)...my tabby.
