Donna's Oxalis

Media:  metal
Dimensions:  3 1/2" x 3 1/8"
Date of Work:  Oct, 2007

This is a RIP (Interpretation with permission) Of Donna Gill Colestock's Oxalis. This was a project that I had planned on doing for a long time and, unfortunately wasn't able to do for this year's RIP show. No matter, I have finished it in time for the Late Show in Dec.

It is done in copper in a technique called repousse, the manipulation of a flat sheet of metal out into a dimensional image using a variety of punches and hammers to stretch and distort the metal while working in a pitch bowl.

I was struck by the extraordinary sense of depth in Donna's painting and thought right away that the composition and subject matter would lend itself well to repousse. It was a challenge to move the metal enough to do the original justice but I am pleased with the result.

Thanks, Donna, for letting me interpret your wonderful painting!
