Life is an adventure! Especially for an artist because we (and I mean generally) have the gift of seeing possibilities in even the most mundane things. My latest passion is wrist cuffs - I guess some could be called Steampunk but others could be called Greenpunk or even Jeanpunk. I mix and match - and all are recycled fabric/items I've collected. In the past I've painted furniture but they're large items and hard to move around (think art fair). For 6 years I exhibited at a gallery in Algoma, WI called The Flying Pig (an awesome place by the way) and have sold 250+ chairs/tables. The need to move on always compels of course and lately I'm doing what I want. And lovin' it.
Course, that doesn't mean that others will be lovin' it. The last 2 art fairs I didn't sell a thing. Is it disappointing? Of course. You're putting yourself out there and leaving yourself wide open for criticism/rejection. Do you let THAT stop you? Course not. My cuffs attract a more out of the box thinkers which I like.
Art is personal, reflective. You keep doing it because you HAVE to keep doing it. At least for me.
Klee, Modigliani, Miro, Picasso - all the abstract artists inspired me with their bold lines, color and spontaneous expression. It has taken me several years to develop my own style and it's constantly changing. I like to use photographs (uncopyrighted of course!) in my artwork and seem to have an obsession with statues, maybe because they freeze moments in history.
I like collages for I like the feel of objects, the texture rearranging sensibilities, reflecting emotion. 3d pieces add to the texture, make a statement. Sometimes I don't know what the statement is exactly - but it has to come out.
I believe it's important for everyone to realize and exercise his or her creativity. My favorite saying is: "You're only limited by your imagination."
