A grapefruit wedge for breakfast.....looks juicy, luscious, inviting, right? The next time you go to bite into one, remember the migrant workers that toiled to bring that piece of fruit to your table. Unfortunately, life for migrant workers has not changed much since Steinbeck wrote his masterpiece "The Grapes of Wrath". Reading that got me to thinking about the plight of migrant workers in this country today, many illegal immigrants. Working under the harshest of conditions, sometimes locked into their trailors at night, paychecks often shorted. We reap the benefits of high quality foods at affordable prices, while the migrant workers and their children suffer from nutritional deficiencies, and exposure to highly toxic pesticides. They have low job security and often work in very unsafe and unsanitary conditions.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Kinda makes me lose my appetite.
