This ukiyo-e style painting is based on a haiku by Matsuo Basho (1644-1694)
The concise beauty of his verse, both singly, and as a larger grouping in "On
Love and Barley" has always been an inspiration to me. My piece tries to
capture that simplicity, that conciseness, as if, any second now, a butterfly
might light on a blossom, sip deeply, and fly away leaving the orchid trembling
from its kiss.
Orchid -- breathing
incense into
butterfly's wings.
