Art: Botanical Pomegranate by Artist Alma Lee
Botanical style seemed a natural choice, to represent my true feelings and wonderment of the pomegranate. The reason you may ask? I never ate a pomegranate until I was 44 years old. It is such an odd looking fruit, and not knowing how to eat it, I pictured myself eating it like and apple, it just seemed wrong. Once I learned how to eat them, as I cut into the fruit I saw the blood red seeds, I really wasn't sure. As it turned out I loved it. It is just a matter of preparation and presentation. Botanicals are done in a simular fashion. First the viewer is struck by all the details of the fruit, the lovely precision of nature, illustrated in all its glory, then all of the senses are aroused to beauty of it. This piece was done on 140 lb smooth bristol board, with color pencil. To preserve the integrity of the original botanical style, the individual section writing is my own, I then I traced the ornate typeset titling of the species and genus of the plant. And yes I must confess, I ate the sectioned fruit as I went, it help to inspire me to draw quicker!
