Route 66 – The Mother Road, The Main Street of America, The Great American highway.
Route 66 was designated by congress in 1926. Dubbed “The Mother Road” by John Steinbeck, it carried dust bowl farmers to California, soldiers back and forth across the country during World War II and after the war it became the ultimate road trip for individuals and families alike. Motels and tourist stops sprang up all along Route 66’s cross country route – each more unique and eye catching than the last. During its life, it saw several route changes before it was finally decommissioned in 1986. This doesn’t mean that this American icon is gone. There are still sections that you can travel complete with roadside attractions. But even if there was nothing left, Route 66 would still be alive and vibrant in our collective consciousness.
