I love this beetle's legs. Can't you just see him leaping all over the place on them? They are truly made for tremendous bounds. Those fabulous legs and his unbelievable, almost mesmerizing color, are why I chose him for this little piece
At the time I did this I was laid up for about two weeks in bed. I didn't have that much room to move around so I did alot of very small stuff. Easier to work with in bed! This was the smallest, but the dirtiest as well, because I had pastel everywhere.
I have always liked to do circles with insects because, to me, they represent perfection, and each insect really is always absolutely perfect for its own environment.
So there is a circle here in warm tones surrounding a shadow of the beetle; under that, the shadow of the shadow itself, as well as the circle. The texture of the canvas really came out here-- I love that you can see its fiber.
The beetle himself is outlined faintly with a light yellow, so that he really springs off of the canvas.
